The reasons for Earth's unique tectonics are not fully understood, but other planets like Mars may have lithospheres that are too thick to break into plates. The two types of crust also differ in thickness, with continental crust being considerably thicker than oceanic: 35 kilometres (22 mi) vs. 6 kilometres (3.7 mi). The idea that sea-floor plates form slowly and continuously at a rate of a few centimeters each year as the ocean crust is being rift apart, is not supported by geologic data. Angular fragments of the progressively unsupported caprock tumble down both the original outer slopes and newly created inner slopes as well to form the jagged talus flatirons that give these landforms their sawtooth profiles. As the twin sheets of oceanic crust expand from the mid-ocean ridge, the Atlantic sea-floor spreads and the Americas get farther away from Africa and Europe. Instead, Archean cratons like the Wyoming Province tend to consist of large domal bodies of primitive granite intruding folded greenstone (metavolcanic) belts and covered with odd volcanic and sedimentary supracrustal rock sequences like the Red Creek quartzite.
