The problem for Plate Tectonics is that with all the oceans closed it logically follows that the continental crust must have once have covered an Earth that was about half the size of the present one. For example, geologists had long recognized that earthquakes are not randomly distributed on the Earth (see Figure 1). The interface between the two plates results in a large fault, termed an interplate thrust or megathrust.
