It is impossible to ascertain the Confederate per- centage of losses; but if Longstreet's statement is correct relative to his battle on the left on July second, — that he made the battle with 17,000 men and that his loss was 6,000, — it would amount in that instance to about 85 per cent. But also, I’m sure, willingness to fight and a determination to support a cause they thought was just. But the bombing created a highly dispensable landscape. In the November of 1642 Hopton, encouraged by promised support from Devon Royalists made his first attempt at taking the cities of Plymouth and Exeter, but was let down by his expected reinforcements and after several months of inconclusive skirmishing, failed to take either and found himself back in Launceston in Cornwall by January 1643.

[16] After Brandy Station, Lee's infantry forces began crossing the Blue Ridge Mountains and headed north, "down" the Shenandoah Valley. We’ll visit sites at Aldie (June 17), Middleburg (June 17-19) and Upperville (June 21) where Stuart’s men clashed with Union cavalry. Our boys seemed safe; there were a few of them in a kind of fringe hanging between the battery sections, that the gunners were swerving their pieces to avoid, but farther down, two-thirds of the way up the hill, came the Confederates, yelling like demons, in a mad charge for oiu* guns.
