There was no vain show in the preparations for battle on either side. Blair was not buried in that national military cemetery because of her own exploits, but because she later married a veteran and was, as his wife, legally entitled to a grave plot. He was serving with the Union in New Mexico when the war started. They’d seen friends die, they bled on the battlefield, they’d seen the worst of everything. The Seven Days battles prevented an early Union victory and changed the conflict from a limited to a total war; Antietam forestalled European recognition of the Confederacy and prompted the Emancipation Proclamation; Vicksburg, Gettysburg, and Chattanooga reversed a tide of Confederate victories that had threatened the Northern will to keep fighting; Sherman's capture of Atlanta and Sheridan's victories in the Shenandoah secured Lincoln's reelection, confirmed emancipation as a Northern war aim, and ensured continuation of the war to unconditional victory.

Heiser explained how the establishment of the national cemetery at Gettysburg, one of the first national cemeteries on a Civil War battlefield, was part of that spiritual legacy. “It was a great victory, but it wasn’t the end,” he said of the battle. “The Northern people needed something of encouragement, some words to tell them, ‘It’s going to be over soon, but we still have to sacrifice.’ And that’s why Abraham Lincoln came here on November 19th, 1863, to speak at the dedication of the Soldiers’ National Cemetery here at Gettysburg.” The spirit of Gettysburg was on display once again after the war, when it became a place of reconciliation between Union and Confederate soldiers. “It’s remarkable that 50 years after the battle, 54,000 Union and Confederate veterans gathered on this battlefield, in what they called the Great Reunion ,” said Heiser.

With his vital supply lines threatened, an already undermanned Lee gambled by sending nearly a third of his army under Gen. To the right of Hancock's line many batteries, and three divisions, or seven brigades of Union infantry defended the west front of Cemetery Hill; and two of those brigades had hardly pulled a trigger in the battle of the previous day. Sheridan pulled back slowly down the Valley and conducted a scorched earth campaign that presaged Sherman's March to the Sea in November.

Now part of Pecos National Historical Park, little has changed in 500 years. These enclaves not only provide bases for blockading squadrons but serve as spring boards for future amphibious operations. Almost accidentally, Confederate troops discovered Union calvary in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. General Halleck; in a despatch from Washington, expressed the fear that his position was too far to the eastward; to which Meade replied, during the forenoon, that in the event he should find the Confederates moving to interpose between his army and Washington, he would fall back on his supplies at Westminster.

We still like to romanticize war, as discussed in chapter five, but the old ways of war are gone and were truly indecent while they lasted. Its steep slopes are heavily wooded, which made it unsuitable for siting artillery without a large effort to climb the heights with horse-drawn guns and clear lines of fire; Little Round Top was unwooded, but its steep and rocky form made it difficult to deploy artillery in mass. Among the many virtues of the Aimones' work is a handy appendix (VIT) listing the various War Department designations, as well as their numbers in the congressional serial set, of which the OR is a part.&nbsp Their work also affords informed discussions of the background, editorial policies, and organization of the OR Armies, Navies, and Atlas; the available finding aids; and the value and limitations of what was in fact the government's greatest venture into documentary editing.

Longstreet's wing of the army marched through the Thoroughfare Gap to join Jackson, uniting the two wings of Lee's army. [37] In order to draw Pope's army into battle, Jackson ordered an attack on a Federal column that was passing across his front on August 28, beginning the Second Battle of Bull Run, the decisive battle of the Northern Virginia Campaign. This forced them to withdraw also, allowing the Confederates to seize Stony Hill.
